The Christmas story is one of hope and new beginnings – but also of the search for protection, a safe place and the feeling of being welcome. These experiences reach far beyond the biblical narrative and have lost none of their relevance to this day. »How shall I receive you?« The familiar question from the Advent chorale becomes the guiding idea behind a Christmas programme that connects the ancient story with the present day. With Adriane Queiroz and Oleksiy Palchykov, two internationally acclaimed voices from the ensembles of the Berlin and Hamburg State Operas, as well as members of the asambura ensemble and Anima Shirvani, the choir’s young singers are joined by exceptional musical partners.
Works by Bach, Mozart and Franck meet music by Bernstein, Ešenvalds, Villa-Lobos, Carrapatoso and Ribeiro. Different musical worlds and traditions enter into dialogue with one another, brought to life by artists whose own journeys touch personally on themes of origins, departure and arrival. The result is a Christmas concert in the Laeiszhalle’s Grand Hall that moves between tradition and the present, familiar Christmas sounds and new musical perspectives – festive and moving, reflective and full of hope.
