Mahler and Mäkelä are an absolute dream team. This season at the Elbphilharmonie, we have the chance to hear them twice. As the newly appointed Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mäkelä demonstrates just how brilliant he is at the podium in a performance of Mahler’s poignant Ninth Symphony. It has a massive score that demands great presence of mind from its conductor, making it just perfect for Mäkelä to impress his audience. It is no coincidence, either, that the American top orchestra is returning to Hamburg with its Mahler »serenade« during the week of the Elbphilharmonie’s 10th anniversary: it was right here, in January 2017, that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra made its first appearance at the brand-new Hamburg concert hall during its opening week.
