A ship full of stories and new ideas

A place that is constantly reinventing itself while remaining true to its history: The MS Stubnitz is one of Hamburg’s most extraordinary cultural venues. Built in Stralsund in 1964, this historic ship combines a maritime past with a vibrant present. Right in the heart of the harbor, it offers a space for socializing, music, and creative freedom.

Industry meets subculture – the unique atmosphere on board

Anyone who steps onto the Stubnitz notices immediately: this place is different. Steel walls, narrow corridors, and former engine rooms define the atmosphere. The ship’s original structure has been deliberately preserved—and that is precisely what makes it so appealing.
Between decks and cargo holds, a setting emerges that is perfectly suited for live concerts, club nights, and exhibitions. Here, sounds feel more intense, encounters more direct, and moments more immediate.

From Deep-Sea Fishing Vessel to Cultural Ship

The history of the Stubnitz began as part of the GDR fishing fleet. Built in Stralsund in 1964, it initially served as a refrigerated transport ship on the world’s oceans. After the political upheaval, the ship was saved from being scrapped in the early 1990s and gradually converted into a cultural venue.
Since 1992, the Stubnitz has been sailing through European ports as a mobile project, bringing music, art, and discourse to unusual places. This eventful past continues to shape its character to this day—as a place that has not only experienced change but actively shapes it.

Culture Beyond the Mainstream

The MS Stubnitz stands for a program that breaks new ground. International artists, local scene luminaries, and experimental formats come together. From indie, punk, and electronic music to audiovisual performances, a wide range of genres is represented.
Since 1992, the ship has been operated as a non-profit cultural venue and has received multiple awards for its curated program.

New berth in HafenCity starting in 2026

A new chapter begins: Starting in October 2026, the MS Stubnitz will be moored at the Cruise Center Baakenhöft in HafenCity. This ensures the ship remains in Hamburg while bringing it closer to one of Europe’s most exciting urban development projects.
The location is initially secured until at least early 2028. Long-term plans are being explored to determine whether the Stubnitz can find a permanent home there.
