Mönckebergstraße

The Mönckebergstraße is probably the most famous and most frequented shopping boulevard in Hamburg.

By 1907, this area between the central station and Town Hall was the "Gängeviertel" - here the poor people lived in narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses. With the construction of Mönckebergstrasse the city fathers killed two birds with one stone: they eliminated the potentially dangerous source of cholera and at the same time created a boulevard that represented the pride and economic power of the Hanseatic city. The boulevard of shopping dreams still impresses today, because there is something for everyone - for young and old alike, and for large and small wallets...

At the beginning, Karstadt Sport, the largest sports shop in Europe, lures its customers in – it even has a skating rink on the roof. Fans of electronic equipment big and small, PC and gaming enthusiasts as well as media-lovers will find a real paradise at the world's largest electrical retailer Saturn. Women often make a headway for Europe's largest shoe shop Görtz. But gentlemen shouldn't miss out either: Gentlemen's outfitters Braun enjoys a very good reputation for excellent advice and a range of high quality clothing. Interesting for both sexes: On the Mö, the Hamburg air has a very special scent - enhanced by the many fragrances by Parfümerie Douglas or from the large Karstadt in the middle of the Mö. Bakeries and cafés as well as various street stalls offer tasty opportunities to rest.

Well rested you can then try out some fashionable items at Galeria Kaufhof, C&A and Thomas i Punkt ... or at Peek & Cloppenburg, Anson's and Zara – to name but a few. Sporty types can check out what's on offers at Sport Scheck or Sport Hütte - and if"a light bulb is suddenly switched on ", this is probably because of Prediger, Hamburg's unique shop for lamps, lights and similar useful home accessories.

Speaking of looking: it is worth spending time at the Passage-Kino cinema, because of its beautiful interior, and a more thorough overview is offered by Fielmann optics on three levels. Jewellery, watches and other valuables can be found at Christ or Juwelier Wempe. Also for the eye: on the corner of Bergstrasse, the main church St. Petri was built in 1195, the oldest parish church in the city. You should take a look at the Madonna and Child from the 1470. The narrow streets surrounding the hotel also offer so much worth seeing - like the Glass Studio of Radio Hamburg (Kreuslerstrasse/Speersort), the Versman-Haus (Corner of Knochenhauertwiete) and so on...

Our tip: Just go on a discovery tour beyond Mö - as well as in the area around Gertrudestrasse, Rosestrasse and Paulstrasse. These are gems with fine antiques, art galleries, book and record shops as well as (we are in Hamburg!) an umbrella shop.
