Museum Harbour Oevelgönne

Historic ships & maritime atmosphere by the Elbstrand

At Neumühlen quay lies the Museum Harbour Oevelgönne, an open‑air museum for historic steamers, sailing and work vessels—free to visit anytime.

A floating museum on the Elbe

The Museum Harbour Övelgönne invites visitors on a journey through maritime history—outdoors and free of charge. Located at the Elbstrand Övelgönne, a charming promenade along the Elbe, historic steamers, barges, and sailing vessels lie moored side by side.

Experience historic ships up close

Most vessels date from 1880 to 1960 and each one tells its own story. Informational plaques on board offer details, and many ships are still seaworthy and regularly seen sailing the Elbe—sometimes right in front of visitors.

Run by volunteers, powered by passion

The harbour is operated by Museumshafen Övelgönne e. V., a non-profit association of around 500 members. Founded in 1977, it is the first of its kind in Germany and has inspired many similar projects.

On-board access and guided tours

The lightship Elbe 3 opens to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Group tours and guest sailings on select ships are available by prior booking—an unforgettable way to experience Hamburg’s seafaring heritage.

New: visitor centre with harbour views

A modern floating visitor centre opened in autumn 2024, offering interactive displays and a panoramic view of the harbour and passing container ships.

Perfect for all – easy to combine

Whether you're out with the family, taking photos, or stopping off during a walk: The harbour is easily combined with a ferry ride, beach visit or café stop. Don’t miss the historic captains’ and pilots’ houses along the nearby Elbchaussee.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Altona & Ottensen

For strolling, having a coffee, taking a walk or having some delicious food – situated directly at the Elbe and traversed by parks, Altona & Ottensen are considered to be charming and diverse districts with character. Brick walls create a rather rough atmosphere in Altona, while it is lively and colourful in Ottensen.
