With a height of almost 280 metres, the television tower in Hamburg is the tallest building. It was built between 1965 and 1968 in the classical reinforced concrete method and officially inaugurated after the German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz as the "Heinrich Hertz Tower". Today, however, hardly anyone knows him under this name. Until 2001, the television tower was also open to the world as a magnet for visitors. As with its Berlin counterpart, the view of Hamburg's rooftops could be enjoyed both on the observation platform and in the mobile restaurant.
Closed, but not forever
Today, the television tower is under a preservation order and is part of the historic Hamburg. However, there are already far-reaching plans for its revival: by 2023, the television tower is to be made accessible to the public again. With its restaurant and viewing platform, it will then be in no way inferior to its Berlin counterpart and provide a breathtaking view over Hamburg.
