Deichstraße

Historic Hamburg

Construction on the offices and residencies on Deichstraße began in the 17th century. Today, the old merchant’s street is the home of many fine restaurants and pubs.

Deichstraße with its restaurants and boutiques exudes typical Hanseatic flair and is only a few steps away from Rathausmarkt, right next to the historic Speicherstadt.

To stroll and enjoy

Old-established traditional restaurants characterise the Deichstraße. Among the most famous addresses are the  and the Deichgraf. The neighbouring Ti Breizh, in English "House of Brittany", on the other hand, is characterised by French influences. Still relatively new in the historic street is the North Coast Coffee Roastery, which stands for the finest coffee from its own roasting.

A journey into the past

In 1842 the Great Fire raged in Hamburg and destroyed large parts of the city. The Deichstraße is one of the last remnants of historic Hamburg, along with a few other alleys. If you want to learn more about the history of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, you should visit theMuseum of Hamburg History.

Outstanding German civil engineering Alter Elbtunnel

When the old Elbe Tunnel, also called St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel, opened in 1911, it was a technical sensation. Today, it is a nostalgic and lovingly tended piece of Hamburg history – and has already celebrated its 100th anniversary.

St. Petri

Hamburg's oldest existing church is located directly in the current shopping district on Mönckebergstrasse, and it is named after the apostle and martyr Peter, who is depicted with a key as the "gatekeeper of heaven".
