It was exactly four years ago that an exciting announcement electrified the classical music world: Klaus Mäkelä was to become principal conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. His official start date: autumn 2027. The rising star was only in his mid-twenties when the orchestra made him this prestigious offer. And he didn’t have to think twice: Amsterdam has long been one of the artistic destinations of choice for the Finnish-born conductor. »The Concertgebouw Orchestra has one of the rarest, most unique and unmistakable sonic characters in the world,« enthuses Mäkelä, who, as Artistic Partner in recent years, has had the opportunity to build an intense relationship with »his« Dutch musicians. In Gustav Mahler’s profound Seventh, Hamburg can now once again look forward to a glimpse of the current state of the relationship between the star conductor and the traditional orchestra. Spoiler: there is crackling tension and, at the same time, the finest harmony!
