RENDEZVOUS AT THE CASTLE Lectures & DiscussionsExhibition

The Grand Duke and Money – The Finances of the Mecklenburg Royal House, 1848–1918

Lecture by Dr. Bernd Kasten, Director of the City Archives of State capital Schwerin
Location: Historical Library
The expenses of a ruling prince in the 19th and early 20th centuries were immense. Castles, servants, travel, celebrations, receptions, horses, and later automobiles—all of this had to be paid for, and none of it was allowed to appear meager. However, as revenues had been steadily declining since the 1870s, the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin came under increasing pressure. When concluding marriage contracts and providing for poorer relatives, they now had to be much more mindful of their finances than in the past.
