The Poiesis Quartet won the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2025. The American ensemble is regarded as one of the most promising string quartets of its generation. Its artistic philosophy is reflected in its very name: in Ancient Greek, poiesis roughly means »to bring into being something that did not previously exist«, encapsulating the ensemble’s ambition to connect the classical repertoire with fresh perspectives.

In this concert, the Poiesis Quartet performs Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s first string quartet, »Calvary« (1956), a rhythmically driven work that combines the classical string quartet tradition with influences from African American spirituals. In contrast stands Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F major, a masterpiece of the early 20th century whose refined harmonies and shimmering colours continue to captivate audiences.
