Hamburger Camerata Classical Music

The Viennese Classical period is at the heart of the Hamburger Camerata’s identity – but so too is thinking outside the box. For this reunion with our good friend Viviane Hagner, Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major, K. 219, is now on the programme.
»Unsurpassed in brilliance, intimacy and wit,« was how the Mozart scholar Alfred Einstein described his last violin concerto. Among the »witty touches« that the young genius from Salzburg indulges in during his concerto is the sudden insertion of a boisterous »alla turca« episode in the finale. For a moment, the composer even has the violins strike the strings with the wooden part of the bow – but then the music carries on as if nothing had happened.

Benjamin Britten’s »Simple Symphony« from 1934 proves that in art, it is precisely the simple things that are particularly difficult to achieve. Britten demonstrates his sense of humour  right from the movement titles of this »Simple Symphony«: There is a »Boisterous Bourrée«, a »Sentimental Sarabande« and a »Playful Finale«. And with his fiftieth birthday firmly in sight, the Camerata’s new friend Marc Bouchkov has Franz Schubert’s Fifth in his repertoire.
