Port des Lumières

Centre for immersive art

Port des Lumières, the first permanent exhibition centre for immersive art in Hamburg, offers its guests a breathtaking and unique art experience in the heart of HafenCity.

Port des Lumières, the largest permanent exhibition centre for digital immersive art in northern Germany, is opening in Hamburg. Visitors can look forward to varied exhibitions, breathtaking technology, high design quality and a truly immersive art experience.

The very special exhibition experience

Immersive art has enjoyed great popularity for several years now. This digital art form immerses visitors in the art and history of the artists; it stimulates all the senses, creating a unique art experience that goes beyond simply looking at a painting. Port des Lumières is Hamburg's new place for spectacular immersive experiences of light, sound and movement. In the heart of HafenCity - in the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier - a digital journey begins that appeals to all the senses. A fascinating world unfolds across 1,700 square metres of space and ten-metre-high walls, in which images come to life and music permeates the room.

Changing productions are shown - currently with highlights such as the opulent Klimt show, the colourful Hundertwasser world and the visual journey ‘Journey’. The special exhibition ‘Cosmos: The immersive journey into space’ will start on 3 July 2025. Guests can expect state-of-the-art projection technology, impressive sounds and special architecture for an immersive experience for all the senses. Whether pulsating colours, iconic motifs or a journey through time and space - this is not about classic viewing, but about emotion, amazement and immersion.

Current programme at Port des Lumières

Through the centuries with light and colour

The exhibition ‘From Vermeer to Van Gogh’ brings over 300 years of Dutch art history to life – from Vermeer's subtle use of light to Rembrandt's dramatic chiaroscuro effect and Van Gogh's vibrant emotionality. In a choreographed sequence of images, painting, music and movement merge into a visual and poetic experience. Each work is interpreted in its own style: sometimes calm and meditative, sometimes pulsating and colourful. The main programme is complemented by the short format ‘Mondrian – The Architect of Colours’, which uses a reduced formal language and rhythmic colour composition to reveal a completely different facet of Dutch art.

From December 2025: A Planet Before Our Time: Dinosaurs

The new show ‘A Planet Before Our Time: Dinosaurs – The Immersive Experience’ offers a unique adventure that takes us back 66 million years to the time of the dinosaurs. With captivating stories and breathtaking images from the Emmy Award-nominated Apple TV series ‘A Planet Before Our Time,’ it immerses visitors in the wonders of a prehistoric world. From the birth of herbivorous dinosaurs to the colossal titanosaur Dreadnoughtus to the nocturnal hunt of the T-Rex, this immersive experience explores the deep connections that unite all life forms on our planet, yesterday and today. The show is accompanied by the original soundtrack by composers Hans Zimmer, Anže Rozman and Kara Talve.

Art for everyone

Visitors of all ages can wander freely through the space, let themselves be enveloped by the paintings or experience new perspectives from the viewing platform in the shape of a ship's bow. The Kids' Atelier invites the youngest guests to join in.

Whether tourist or Hamburg resident, technology fan, art lover or adventure seeker - the Port des Lumières is the perfect tip for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in another world.
