Focus on Nature – the international Nature Writing Festival Hamburg 2025 presents our knowledge of nature, its impact, and its significance. Natural sciences and humanities, nonfiction, and literary formats present what they can say about nature: what can be said and where the limits of what can be said lie.

Nature's Rebirth - On the Loss and Resurrection of a Counterworld. A conversation with Georg Toepfer and Frank Fehrenbach. Tanya Lieske will moderate the discussion and answer questions from the audience.

It's a seemingly paradoxical observation: Although nature has been repeatedly declared dead in literature and imagery for centuries, there is hardly anything more vibrant in literature and the visual arts than nature itself. Biologist and philosopher Georg Toepfer, together with art historian Frank Fehrenbach, uses texts and images to demonstrate the power of this imagination. How does this revenant come about? What are the contents and structures that bring it about? And what is the thread running through history leading to what we currently call nature writing?
