Pianist Tigran Hamasyan is constantly reinventing himself. Starting with classical piano as a child, he transitioned into jazz, achieving acclaim first in Armenia and then internationally. His music is deeply rooted in Armenian traditions while seamlessly incorporating elements of rock, folk, classical and beyond. Now Tigran Hamasyan visits Hamburg with his programme »The Bird of a Thousand Voices« – a mesmerising interpretation of an ancient Armenian legend about courage, forgiveness, self-discovery and rebirth.
In a mystical kingdom lost in time, an aging king, burdened by a curse, seeks to restore harmony and peace. A prophecy speaks of the legendary »bird of a thousand voices«, hidden in a distant, magical realm. Whoever finds it and unlocks its song will save the kingdom. Determined and fearless, Areg, the king’s youngest son, embarks on a perilous quest – traversing vast deserts, treacherous icy peaks and raging seas, while facing 40-headed demons along the way.

»After I stumbled upon this tale, my life hasn’t been the same. It’s a really powerful story, and it’s given me an enormous impulse to create. I decided that the music to this culturally significant story had to embody what, for me, is the life-changing capacity of the tale itself. In practice that meant I wanted to write something totally new for it.« Blending composition with improvisation, storytelling with singing and virtuosic jazz, Hamasyan’s music captivates audiences, weaving a medieval saga that rivals even the most thrilling modern-day streaming TV series!
