She produces sounds that come from deep inside the throat: Inuk Tanya Tagaq. »Kattajaq« is the name of this centuries-old, traditional throat singing of the Inuit, which forms part of their ancestors’ cultural heritage. The singer grew up in Nunavut, Canada – one of the northernmost populated regions in the world, inhabited mainly by Inuit. Her musical breakthrough came spontaneously and unexpectedly as the support act for no lesser figure than Björk. Although the world tour also took her to Germany, she didn’t make it to Hamburg – something that the »Arctic Voices« festival is now happy to rectify.
