For many years, Sol Gabetta has been one of the most deeply moving and inspiring artists in the large Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival family. She performed at the SHMF for the first time in 2008 and was the acclaimed portrait artist in 2014 – the charismatic cellist has given a total of 35 concerts in a wide variety of formations in Schleswig-Holstein to date. Sol Gabetta will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the festival together with the Phiharmonia Orchestra from London under the direction of the young Finn Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who as chief conductor of the legendary orchestra is the successor to stars such as Riccardo Muti and Giuseppe Sinopoli.

The large-scale concert in the Elbphilharmonie begins with Tchaikovsky’s famous »Capriccio Italien« before Sol Gabetta performs Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto – one of the most demanding and intense works in the cello repertoire, which the composer wrote for none other than the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich. The second part is dedicated to the melodically and rhythmically complex Fifth Symphony by this year’s SHMF Portrait Artist Fazl Say, who says of the composition process: »Writing a symphony with No. 5 is a challenge – somehow Beethoven is always behind you!«
