In summer, the Kansas City Symphony and its principal conductor Matthias Pintscher will be performing. The musicians will be bringing with them one of the most popular works by their compatriot Aaron Copland, as well as two symphonic works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

In his ballet music Appalachian Spring, Copland reflects on the origins of European settlers in the USA. The focus is on a newlywed couple in Pennsylvania and a lavish celebration with square dancing and fiddle music. The violin sounds very different in Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s famous violin concerto. The composer poured his most intimate feelings into the touching melodies that renowned violinist Gil Shaham will bring to life on his Stradivarius this evening.

Sergei Rachmaninoff, one of the last great composers of the late Romantic period, was one of Tchaikovsky’s favourite students and does his teacher proud with his rich melodies. His Third Symphony is another example of expressive music that touches the heart so deeply that the composer himself considered it one of his most successful works
