Hamburg shines brightly – well-designed urban lighting contributes significantly to safety, orientation, and quality of life. At the same time, the management of nighttime light is a concern for many cities in Europe: light pollution is increasing across the continent and is having a growing impact on the environment, health, and urban climate. The conscious use of modern lighting technology offers the opportunity to use light precisely where it is needed, thereby reducing emissions. This allows cities to be made even more livable and sustainable.

In this event, researchers from Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), as part of the "Reingeducated!" series, will demonstrate how modern lighting concepts can help make cities more sustainable. Using vivid examples at virtual reality stations and small installations in a portable mini-light lab, participants will experience how innovative lighting works – and where we might be better off doing without light altogether. The event is part of the EU project DARKER SKY, in cooperation with the Altona district office.

Get involved: Where is lighting particularly important, and where can it be deliberately adapted – depending on the needs and use of the urban space? Discover with us how we can rethink light to further develop Hamburg as a healthy, safe, and livable city.
