About the Series

In their philosophical comic series Salut, Deleuze!, Jens Balzer and Martin tom Dieck approach the thinking of Gilles Deleuze in an unconventional way: in three narratively and visually distinct episodes, Deleuze is not explained but accompanied — as a character, as an idea, as a movement. At times he appears in a pub in Hamburg, at others he flickers through media-philosophical dreamscapes or reflects on love, identity, and eternal becoming.

The trilogy combines theory, pop culture, and visual art into a radically different form of philosophical storytelling — clever, witty, and idiosyncratic.

About the Authors

Jens Balzer, born in 1969, lives in Berlin. He is a journalist in the arts and culture section of DIE ZEIT and the author of ten books on the history, theory, and critique of pop culture. His latest book, After Woke (2024), reached number 1 on the non-fiction bestseller list of DIE ZEIT, ZDF, and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, was shortlisted for the Tractatus Prize for philosophical essay writing, and appeared on the SPIEGEL bestseller list.

Martin tom Dieck, born in 1963, has lived in Hamburg since 1986. His debut album Der unschuldige Passagier (The Innocent Passenger) won the Max and Moritz Prize at the Erlangen Comic Salon. In 2000, he received another Max and Moritz Prize as “Best German-Language Illustrator.” In 2005, he was awarded the Prize of the École supérieure de l’image Angoulême. Since 2009, Martin tom Dieck has been a professor of illustration at the Folkwang University of the Arts.
